Rules change every year, so always check your state DMV site. Common pattern:
1. Study the **state driver handbook** (free PDF on the DMV site).
2. Take the **written/knowledge test**.
3. Practice with your host parent for a few weeks.
4. Take the **road test**.
Many au pairs bring their **home country license translated** — some states let you drive on it for 30-90 days.
