Getting a US driver's license as an au pair

Most host families expect you to drive. Here is how to convert your foreign license or get a US one.

Rules vary by state. Some states let you drive on your home-country license for a few months, others require a US license immediately.\n\n**Step 1:** Check your state DMV website. Search "[state name] driver license non-resident".\n\n**Step 2:** Bring your passport, DS-2019, Social Security card (or denial letter), and proof of address.\n\n**Step 3:** Written test, then road test. The written test in most states can be taken in Spanish, Portuguese, German, French, and other languages.\n\n**Tip:** Practice the road test route with your host family in their car before test day.
